Natural Gas Infrastructure

Overview

Rural Ontario needs a natural gas infrastructure program and a rural rate to drive our rural economy and create jobs. Ontario farms and rural businesses rely heavily on sound infrastructure and competitive energy rates. These two key inputs overlap in the form of access to natural gas in rural Ontario. The extension of natural gas pipelines in rural Ontario is the largest economic stimulation the provincial government can provide.

Natural gas is half the cost of electricity and approximately one third the cost of propane. Less than one fifth of Ontario farms have access to natural gas. Expanded gas lines in rural Ontario would give farmers access to savings for heating barns, operating grain dryers and generating electricity on an as needed basis. Over 500,000 rural families will cut their energy bills by more than $1,000 per year and 30,000 farms and small business will save more money that will be reinvested into the local rural economy to create jobs.
